Remembering 9/11: The Tribute WTC Visitor Center

Melissa and I had the opportunity to go to New York a few years ago. One of our many stops was Ground Zero and The Tribute WTC Visitor Center. As you walk through, you will see no reference of the terrorists that attacked. Their names or faces are no where to be found, and the politics that surround that day are purposely left out. The visitor center is there solely to honor the people that died during 9/11. It is truly a place to reflect on the events of that day and to make what so many of us only saw on the news and radio tangible before our eyes. All of the feelings came back to both me and Melissa as we made our way through pictures and stories of people we will never know. How could the feelings not come back? One part of the center that stopped Mel and I in our tracks was of a firefighter’s coat and hat. It had been burned and ripped, and instantly with one look of that jacket you saw the bravery, fear, and heartache that came to that person’s family.

Fast forward to last week. I was driving to work and was listening to NPR. They have been doing different radio pieces to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of September 11. Audie Cornish was interviewing a man who was an ex-firefigher. As his story unfolds, it turns out the owner of the firefighter jacket and hat was his son. He tells the story better than I do. I am so happy that I happened to be listening to find out more about the owner of the jacket and hat who selflessly sacrificed everything. Please listen to his story of that day: NPR story

Luminous Prayer Flags

In many religions of the world, collective prayers are often lifted in an audible form, but there is often a visual form as well. Candles are lit, altars are raised, monuments built. There’s something about seeing a physical representation of a person’s prayer that I find awe-inspiring. Tibetan Buddhists are no exception. They raise prayer flags in high spaces, streaming them across the mountainside, lifting prayers for others: for peace, for protection, for happiness. Seeing what must be hundreds of thousands of flags fluttering in the wind, knowing the many people they represent, is one of the most spectacular sites I have ever seen.

In the evening or early morning, the flags are just as beautiful and serene. 20110910-074653.jpg

Reading Rainbow, Blog Edition

You do remember the tv show, right? And who could forget LeVar Burton? I can still hear the intro song in my head with the little rainbows springing out of books and dancing across the screen.

Sadly, the show is off the air; however, reading recommendations need not end. My friend Verna is an educator who has a passion for literacy. From that vantage point, she writes the Reading Rainbow blog, reviewing literature that might not always get the mainstream attention it deserves. As she says, the blog is “a collection of children’s and young adult literature authored by individuals of color to provide meaningful and authentic cultural perspectives while building literacy and activism amongst young readers.” It’s the perfect resource to assist you in developing a more well-rounded library for the children in your life. Check it out!

Colourful Flight

Jim and I went to the Air Expo on a delightfully hot day in July. I surprised him with tickets, and admittedly I wasn’t particularly invested in the joys of aviation. Much to my surprise, shortly after we arrived I found plane after plane with vibrant aesthetics, including this first colourful plane. Lynn O’Jala and her husband Denny O’Connell built it together.  Ten days after they finished their second plane, a twin to the one below, he passed away. It is absolutely tragic that his life ended so early, and yet it’s beautiful that he was able to fulfill his dream before he died. Even more incredible is that his wife was left with the lasting legacy of their love for one another.

Iron and Wine

You know when you listen to certain music it has this comforting, peaceful quality, and it doesn’t matter how many times you listen the feeling of being grounded and at home resonates so strongly it’s like chatting with an old friend.  Sam Beam’s music is like home to me.  That is the only way I can describe his music.  When I am feeling stressed out or overwhelmed, I listen to his music and I feel connected to myself once again.  Not only is Sam an amazing vocalist and guitarist, but his lyrics are like poetry.  I am drawn to Naked as we Came, not because it is particularly upbeat, but because of the reality and truth that is told within it.

Role models for love

Fran & Marlo Cowan (married 62 years) seized the opportunity when they saw a piano in the Mayo atrium.  They didn’t expect that their  performance would go viral on youtube and inspire people to live more passionate lives.  I hope this puts a smile on your face as it did mine.  Let’s try to emulate even a fraction of the joy these two share.

If you are curious about their background, they were featured in an Iowa Public Television show.  It is is worth watching.  After 62 years of marriage, it is inspiring to witness two people who have lived a lifetime together through all their ups and downs, and yet still have adventures – this is truly living!

Beautiful Irises

It’s rather fitting that her name is Iris, isn’t it? Her eyes are dreamy. I think it’s safe to say that my niece has colourized my entire family. She is quite expressive and thoroughly entertaining. I’ve never seen my dad so smitten. Happy Birthday, Papa!
